Hello friends!
Here I am, sliding into your inbox with an invitation.
On October 24th I published "Look dad I'm a paid writer" which has since been shared by
, viewed over 7,000 times, and received 188 comments which tells me - It’s a story and topic that really resonates with many of you here.Part one of that post was the written walk through of my entire first year on Substack, what I did, and a completely transparent peek behind the curtain of becoming a paid writer here.
I’m all for honest conversations when it comes to the creative journey - in any craft, and because so many of you are writers - you enjoyed this one!
Many of you already know that I’ll be introducing monthly online workshops next year open to everyone who associates themselves as a mother maker, though paying readers will receive perks and discounts.
I’m really excited about these as they will be covering many topics and art forms, from creativity, motherhood, soulful business, sales, social media, storytelling, poetry, branding, and beyond all of that into the energetic side of our creations.
These workshops will be a delicious hum for all creatives, not just writers - and you’ll notice that all the concepts should be applicable no matter what you “do”.
HOWEVER,
My first live call, will be NEXT WEEK (woo!) and as promised, be the PART TWO of the “Look dad, I’m a paid writer” post.
This call will be a virtual rendezvous where we explore the world of substack and writing. It will be hosted via zoom and will be a welcome to ALL (So not exclusive to mother makers. If you are interested, then you are welcome to join).
It will be a LIVE QNA style, where I’ll riff a bit about my journey on Substack, How I’ve grown here this past year, and answering both questions that have been submitted, and any ones that come up in the call.
For those who are new here, my perspective is both practical, transparent and mystical. I believe business, creativity and the process of “building” something is somewhat of an energetic/ spiritual process that weaves between practical knowledge and intuitive guidance.
If you have already read $100,000 intuitive hits you would know my approach to things like this.
I just want to make the lens I see Substack through, clear to you before you choose to join, and I will likely have a baby on my lap or boob.
Some of the questions submitted:
From
: Congrats on your anniversary and thank you for sharing all this insight! Do you have tips for writers wanting to grow but don't necessarily have a large following on other socials? I started my substack to really just share my thoughts with other mamas, but it would be amazing if somehow it can generate income. From
: Would you please elaborate a bit more on making your paid content 2/3-3/4 of your work vs. being generous with your free content? Thanks. From
: Curious how you promote in IG stories? No way to link a post. Did you use photos, reels, your profile page? From
: Did you find it harder here to initially connect to people in comparison lets say to instagram 2016? I am noticing that I feel a bit lost to get a community here started. If substack was a city, and our letters our homes, I appreciate it so much to be let in much more intimately than on other social media platforms, but I find it a bit more tricky to leave my home if that makes sense? I guess, I want to say, I have a harder time meeting my neighbours. Do you have any heart-advice for me?From
: Thank you for sharing this Kat. Wow. I love how you describe your relationship with Substack as a long-term relationship as opposed to the summer fling.Approaching your work here with curiosity and experimentation. As a creative that really speaks to me. Also as a Mum. I find balancing my creativity, with my day job and with mothering, always a challenge. I was just wondering and getting really geeky, do you have a posting calendar/schedule planned in advance? From
: In this one-year journey there was also a time where you rewarded people who shared your posts or your personal substack link on other social platforms (or mail and whatsap I guess?).... So that paid community could get 3 months for free or free subs would have to possibility to become a paid member without the 'money'. How was that working for you? And is there a reason why you don't do that anymore? I thought it was a brilliant way to spread your work and also to give people with less capacity the opportunity to enjoy your work as well! very curious! From
: I’d love to hear more about how you are able to structure your writing. Having categories helps I guess as you shared, certain days for certain topics, but also when you write what and schedule. As you said the energy can be felt and when I try to write for a certain day but am in a contracted energy it’s tricky, however I see consistency is greatly responded to. Any tips would be appreciated. And apart from that thanks for your shining again! Oh: how do I restack with a quote ???From
: I’d love to understand how much time you spent on networking, notes, commenting on other peoples posts and replying to those under your own longer articles? Has this time commitment shifted aside from of course birth and mama responsibilities, maybe because you’ve seen some things work better than others?I’m more than happy to dive into bridging the gap between different social media platforms, story telling, relating to your substack as an energetic exchange, and more practical things like how to know whether to offer something free or paid, Laying out a post so it’s easier to read etc.
I am by no means an expert but I am an open book. I can share honestly from my own journey… And I’ll see if I can invite
from on to possibly help with the questions I can’t answer! We’ll see if the time zones line up!Here’s what you guys had to say about my last Substack Live Community Call which had well over 100 people tune in live or catch the replay:
Babes amazing timing as I’ve just solidified my decision to start mine! Watching now and super nourishing, inspiring & giving me a sense of remembering that I do have magick to offer - excitinggg🌹🌹 thanks for your time and generosity love x
Just wanted to thank you for sharing this! So helpful -- I'm just exploring this as an idea, so I loved hearing your behind-the-scenes experience and numbers.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED spoke to me in every way! Can't wait to use the platform! SO excited THANK YOU
Wow, what a beautiful and informative call. Thank you so much Kat for taking the time to do this for us all! Unfortunately I couldn’t catch the live, but I just watched the replay, and absolutely loved it!🤍✨ It feels like the perfect platform for my business and creativity, and I’ll be setting it up
Loved this so so much! I have been thinking about substack for a year now, and even more so the past couple of months. Then last week I felt the strong pull and then joined the call and it affirmed so much for me. As a creative and writer, and someone who feels more and more inclined to steer away from Instagram and return to my love and passion of long form writing, this feels so nourishing and spacious. And, our words hold value and I believe it is so important for artists to be supported for their work. Thank you Kat!
Thanks for taking the time to do this call as I watched a YouTube video the day before which was helpful but this made my decision to launch more certain! I am excited and nervous but you have helped me navigate a few more strategies on how to map out free vs paid. It took me 3 days to watch it as motherhood kept kicking in. Thanks for always inspiring so many of us to pursue our creative abilities even in motherhood!
